Ask what a nonprofit CEO earns and you'll get answers all over the map — mostly because the numbers in circulation come from voluntary salary surveys that lean heavily toward large, well-resourced organizations. We wanted a cleaner answer, so we went to the one place every tax-exempt organization has to disclose it: the IRS Form 990.

The result is our 2026 Nonprofit CEO Pay Report, built from the reported pay of 68,386 chief executives across 24 industries. A few of the findings surprised even us.

$60K → $530K for the same job

The same nonprofit CEO role pays nearly ten times more at a large organization than a small one. Budget — not cause — is the biggest driver of pay.

The typical CEO earns far less than the headlines

The median nonprofit CEO takes home about $130,000 in total reported compensation. That's a long way from the eight-figure packages that make the news — the highest in our data topped $30 million, more than 200 times the median. Those mega-salaries are real, but they sit at the far end of a very long tail. Only one in ten nonprofit CEOs earns more than roughly $379,000; a quarter earn under $78,000.

Size beats cause — every time

Here's the finding worth sitting with: which cause an organization serves barely moves the needle on what it pays its leader. Budget does almost all the work. Read across any sector and pay roughly doubles at each jump in organization size. In human services, the median CEO of a small organization earns around $60,000 — while the leader of a $250M-plus human-services organization earns closer to $530,000. Same title, same mission, nearly a tenfold gap. The lever is size, not sector.

Everyone got a raise

Among the executives we could track across two years, median pay rose 4.9% — comfortably ahead of inflation. And it was nearly universal: every one of the 24 industries posted an increase.

Where the money concentrates

Two patterns hold at the top. Nine of the ten highest-paid nonprofit executives run hospital systems — that's where the eye-popping numbers live. And geographically, Washington, D.C. stands alone, with a median roughly 76% above the national figure, thanks to the trade associations and national organizations headquartered there.
